FAQs
This is the section where we try to solve your problems with operating our website, or with its content.
Hopefully, the most common problems are dealt with here, but if enough of the same type turn up, we will (a) post an answer here, and (b) fix it anyway!
- I can't get into Members Area
- 1. Have you followed the login instructions correctly? They have been extensively tested...
- 2. Are you a Encompass Australia member with a valid and current membership number?
- How do I get an OpenVMS Hobbyist License?
- You must be a member of Encompass Australia to obtain an OpenVMS Hobbyist License. You will need your membership number to access the Members Only area to make an application. Your membership number is sent to the USA also to verify your membership of Encompass to the license suppliers.

Site Technical Specifications
As Webmaster, I have been asked a number of times what I use to create and manage this website. Here's the good oil (trans: "reliable information").
- HTML Construction
This site is hand-written to HTML 4.1 standard using the Araneae HTML editor. It is tested during production on all three noted browsers listed (this is also where I find the bugs in each of the browsers!).
My computer (was a 150MHz Pentium with 64MB RAM and 6GB HD running Windows NT4 SP6, but now ...) is a Compaq 6552AU AMD XP1700+ with 256MB RAM and 80GB HD running Windows XP Pro.
This website does not use frames, Java or Active-X, but does use SSI and a single CSS stylesheet.
Encompass Australia Inc is served to the Internet
by a Tru64 Alpha server running in
Melbourne, Victoria managed by Carringbush.Nte. The server software is
Apache.
- What are those pictures in the heading?
- They are of various views and items pertaining to Australia, and they are actually optimised animated GIFs in the form of a "slide show." I create and change these images about monthly. I use MicroGraphx Picture Publisher for all image work, and GIF Animator for making up (surprise!) animated GIFs. I have many more images I would like to show, but end-performance to the user would suffer if I did!
- Suggestions and requests for (family-safe) subjects in new images will be considered favourably.
- Any known bugs for my browser?
- Oooh yeah!
- IE 6.x sometimes renders IMG (image) commands as comments (cute...not!).
- Netscape 4.x and Opera 5.12 will not properly display animated GIFs. They will show only the first "frame" of the image. Solution: Get the next version up - they're free, and they work!
- Netscape 4.x does not render hover attributes for links, and does not do pop-up alternate text display on hover for images and links.
- Netscape 4.x does not conform to (its own!) CSS specification when rendering DIV classes. Instead of rendering the effect to the border specified by the encapsulating item, it only renders the effect to the outside border of the item specified. This produced the bad-looking menus on the earlier version of this website.
- Netscape 4.x seems to have a problem rendering tables where the padding values are provided in a class specification in a cascading style sheet. It appears to accumulate all the top and bottom padding values and show them as blank space above the table.
