Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) - the latest buzzword in the storage industry
Willie Lusted
Willie will present his views on ILM and the hp offerings of relevance.
Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is the latest buzzword in the storage industry. ILM defines the procedures for automating the process of placement and movement of data between the various tiers of storage devices. ILM is the process of managing the placement and movement of data on storage devices as it is generated, replicated, electronically distributed, protected, archived, and ultimately retired. ILM stores, indexes, searches, retrieves, and copies data according to the way it is used during its life span, including its ultimate destruction or deletion.
ILM helps organizations optimize their systems and storage infrastructures. Not all information created has equal importance to an enterprise, nor are access requirements for all information the same. For example, critical data used to run the business must be accessible at all times and requires the highest level of protection (with the fastest recovery capabilities) and performance. The underlying goal of an ILM is to manage the data life cycle.
Willie Lusted is a Storage Sales Specialist at hp. He has worked in the Storage Industry for the past 10 years with various storage vendors. Willie traditionally works in large corporate and public sector accounts and is a subject matter expert on most aspects of design, architecture and industry trends. His current focus is on Information Lifecycle Management (ILM).

Migrating an application from Tru64 to Linux
Michael Klein
The topic will be a warts-and-all analysis on the trials and tribulations of migrating a large scale application that spans many hundreds of machines and dozens of sites from Tru64 to Linux. The customer base for this migration is essentially the world's Air Traffic control authorities spanning many countries. It is simplistic to just look at the potential "savings" to be made from specifying commodity hardware and freeware operating systems. There are many hidden issues that need to be added to the equation, such as: supply chain reliability, logistics, procurement, code porting & validation, third-party hardware & software support etc. These and other issues observed along the way will be candidly discussed from both a Technical and Project Management perspective.
Michael Klein During the 20+ years that Michael Klein has been in the IT industry, he has held various positions ranging from Hardware Engineer, Systems Administrator, Consultant & Integrator with most of the major Vendors, as well as Academic end users. Some of the vendors being: Sperry Univac, Raytheon, Wang, Ungerman Bass, GEC Alsthom, Digital, Compaq, HP. Most recent employment has been in the area of Systems Management tools, installing and integrating products from Tivoli, BMC, CA, Spectrum etc. He is currently employed with a supplier of Air Traffic Control Systems, developing in-house software tools that install and maintain Unix platforms. His hobbies include collecting old Cars, Typewriters, Computers and basically anything else that is too good to go to the tip (in fact his Computer Hardware museum is probably only rivalled in Victoria by Andy Stewart's collection).
